Independence Day

From the Houston Chronicle 7.5.2009:

"Houstonians Braved 100-degree heat to celebrate Independence Day at parks, parties and other events across the region."

Oh yes we did!

I finally found my camera cord so lets get this show on the road shall we? We had an awesome 4th of July. It started on the night of the 3rd at the Cynthia Woodlands Mitchell Pavilion watching the Houston Symphony preform their "Star Spangled Tribute" with songs like Oh Susana, The Battle Hymn of the Republic with the Cactus Cuties and of course Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture complete with cannons roaring & fireworks. It was so late that on our way home Ellis fell asleep and Charlie and I were on autopilot, not even really talking. Next thing you know I see fm1960 (a road that is south of where we live) and something clicks in my half asleep brain. We had passed our exit and were well on our way to our old apartment. Too funny.

July 4th we were up and at 'em pretty darn early considering the late night before. Charlie and I had a 'discussion' about proper Saturday morning breakfast food a couple weeks ago that ended with a comment from me that went something like 'fine, you'll get eggs and bacon for breakfast every Saturday for the rest of your damn life!" Except for Saturday 7.4.2009 - he just got bacon because I ran out of time for eggs. Why? because we were on our way to the Woodlands Parade for the 3rd year in a row! It was hot and humid but we found a nice patch of shade and set up camp. For sure the best part of the parade is when all the police and firemen go by. After that we came home and made hot dogs for lunch while we watched the Coney Island's 2009 Hot Dog eating contest. We then hung out for a little while before heading over to the pool for some swimming. A couple hours in the pool and then back to the house for some rather disappointing BBQ. (my bbq skills are a bit rusty) We ate and watched A Capital Fourth on PBS before once again packing up into the van and heading down into Houston. We ended up over by the Miller Outdoor Theater, listening to NPR broadcast the from Miller live while we patiently waited for the the fireworks. Son fell asleep and missed the show but it was wonderful. Truly perfect end to a great Fourth of July.

How was your 4th??

We watched the fireworks from our apartment, always the best. C still doesn't like the noise, so she was cleaning up in her bedroom (shock horror!) during the show.

Your blog and photos are superb! Thanks.
