So far this morning Son has had 3 time outs and I've had 2. You might say they are an important part of our families bag of trick for peaceably living together. We think of them less as punishment and more as a chance to get out of the moment that is causing discord, change perspective and start again. I think my mom used to make us run around the house 5x to much the same effect.
Top Three Reasons For Getting Time Out:
Son
1. Throwing
2. Playing with the door
3. Licking the TV
Mom
1. Acting like a 'B'
2. Ignited angerball
3. Exhaustion/needs to regroup
Dad
1. Grouchy
2. Tired
3. Jerk-a-saurus Rex (need I say more?)
Any or all of these situations call for a time out. A moment or two in peace to reflect on our actions, how we would like to change them and then a nice slow reintegration into the group. It makes life around here so much more enjoyable. I'm thinking given the current pace of things around here that it may be prudent to make a comfy quiet corner for those in time out to relax and reclaim their zen. What do you think? Do you use timeouts?

Timeouts never worked in the 'early days' because we lived in that itty bitty studio apt and putting her in a chair outside the door just gave her a new and different performance arena.
2 years ago: I would go outside and sit on the curb until I was calm enough to act like the adult.
C called the cops at least twice. Those were interesting time outs.
Me retreating to my own room wouldn't work. She learned my trick of unlocking doors so that didn't work either. Just me going outside worked.
Oh, tried locking HER outside. that didn't work either.
Timeouts now: we go to our separate rooms. and close the doors.
lol.
Never heard of timeout till every was way past 2..but I must say that as adults it seems to be a very good idea..sometimes too much of a good
thing.lol.LOL!! SOOOO, as an observer I have seen it work and in proper proportions looks viable.
Good luck..it always is good to have a contingency plan..generally for our own sanity..hugs...still the hugs...
